An awesome experience.

When I went to coney island I studied with the class about the habitat and the organisms that live there, we even found a horseshoe crab shell on the beach which still in the class today.

Horseshoe crab (limulus polyphemus)

Everybody's hands were freezing and papers were flying because the weather was cold and windy but then we went to the aquarium in where we warmed up and get to see different kinds of animals and learned more about the estuary that a lot of kids and even adults don't know and probably would never have the opportunity to learn it.

Memories of Coney Island

When I went to Coney Island I went to the beach and to the New York Aquarium. When we got to the beach we first did water quality testing and then we found many kinds of garbage like bottles, bags and cans of soda. On the beach I found many kinds of shells, such as shells from blue mussels, horseshoe crabs ,, and moonsnails. Then, we went to the Aquarium and I saw many animals like a Beluga whale, seahorses and other animals. We met with people that knew a lot about animals. My experience was very beautiful because I saw beautiful animals with different colors and sizes. I learned many things on this trip that I did not know before. For example, male seahorses grow their babies in their pouch. If I had to choose a trip I liked most I would choose this trip. The other trips that I have taken I liked, but not as much as I liked the Aquarium. I can compare the Atlantic Ocean with the other bodies of water we have visited because we always do water quality testing. -J.P.

As our class walked from the subway to the New York Aquarium, we walked down the boardwalk of Coney Island. All the rides and games were closed for the winter, but I recognized the Cyclone ride.
On that day we went on the beach to do water quality testing. That day was cloudy and sunny, but it was too could outside. We met people that worked in the New York Aquarium and they were very nice. We did many different things and looked at the animals. My experience was very good because I learned about something that I like. This trip was compared to the other trips becuase we always do water quality testing. I learned about the electric eel. That eel is dangerous becuase it can give more than a 500 volt shock. And now I know how big whales can get. -A.N.

nitrates by victor diaz

How you measure nitrate:

The first step that you need to do is take out the test tube
and put the water in it. And then you take out the two
droppers and add ten drops into it. Next you
put the lid on the testube and shake for thirty seconds and then
you add ten drops from a second bottle. Now you gently shake for one minute.
After waiting five minutes you compare it with the color card.

How to use color card:

You compare the color of the water
whi the color card and then you see the number that the color of the water
has

DISSOLVED OXYGEN

WHAT DISSOLVED OXYGEN MEASURES?
D.O. measures the amount of oxygen in the water.

HOW WE MEASURE DISSOLVED OXYGEN?
The first step to do dissolved oxygen is to take 25ml of water in a little cup.
The second step is to take a little bottle of glass with
a chemical inside (this bottle is call the ampule).and then
break it into the little cup of water that the chemical and
the water can mix all together. The third and last step is to
take the mixture and compare it to the scale to see how much
dissolved oxygen is in the water.

WHY DO WE MEASURE DISSOLVED OXYGEN?
For more marine animals,the presence
of oxygen in their enviroment is as critical as it for humans because
they respire by using dissolved oxygen in the water around.

DISSOLVED OXYGEN IN CONEY ISLAND
The dissolved oxygen in coney Island was 8ppm. (ppm mean par per millions)
in the prospert park the dissolved oxygen was 5.5ppm in dead horse bay was 9ppm and in pier 40 was 7ppm. given this dates mean that coney Island is a helpty place for
animals to live because the amount of dissolved oxygen compare to the others is
almost the same exept for prospert park but is alright because the less is can be
is 5ppm.

this is a picture of how dissolved oxygen gets into the water and how gets
out of water.
